This morning was awesome. I woke up to a fresh coating of Northern Arizona snow. When I got to the hospital, Joel was sleeping pretty good. I didn’t wake him and went to make a couple of calls. When I got back in, he was talking to the nurse. He slept great throughout the night from what I was told. He was up for the next two hours. I helped him have a little breakfast, oatmeal and an english muffin this morning. He was also feeding himelf. Drinking Gatorade, coffee, milk, and water. His temperature has come down a little. The blood cultures, taken last night, will be back in a couple of days. They are trying to wean him off the oxygen, and he was off it for the two hours that I was there. Doing well the whole time. He is also in a little less pain this morning, as opposed to last night.
He asked if the Broncos are on yet. They are on at 2 p.m. out here and he can’t wait to watch. They also put Joel in a body brace so he can sit up. He really likes his brace and is excited that it will good to help him heal. They also took out two drains that were in his back, near the scar. The scar is big. About 7 to 9 inches. The nurse also said he may get one of his chest tubes on the left side out.
Anyway, he was in great spirits, telling jokes — being Joel basically. He also asked about the blog. He said he wants to be in control, but right now it’s a matter of getting him to the internet or vice versa. He also asked about his phone. he wanted to call Erika. He ended up calling Erika on my phone. She was confused at first but elated when it came to her that Joel is actually calling her. He may make more calls today. If you do talk to him, please keep it short. I hate to be big-brothery, but you know.
